Kitchen Tile Flooring — Expert Installation by CSI
Carpet Services Incorporated installs ceramic, porcelain, and natural stone tile floors in kitchens across Chicagoland. Durable, beautiful, and built to last — backed by 45+ years of installation expertise since 1979.
Kitchen Tile Flooring — Practical, Beautiful, Lasting
The kitchen is the hardest-working room in any home or commercial property. Between spills, foot traffic, dropped items, and constant moisture, the floor in a kitchen must withstand more punishment than virtually any other surface. That's why Carpet Services Incorporated (CSI) consistently recommends tile as the gold standard for kitchen floors — and why Chicagoland homeowners and business owners have trusted us to install it since 1979.
Kitchen tile flooring offers a combination of benefits that few other materials can match: near-zero water absorption, exceptional scratch resistance, virtually unlimited design options, and a lifespan that can outlast the kitchen itself when properly installed. Ceramic tile, porcelain tile, and natural stone each bring distinct characteristics, and choosing the right one for your kitchen's specific traffic level, subfloor conditions, and aesthetic vision makes all the difference.
At CSI, we carry full tile lines from leading suppliers including Dal-Tile and Virginia Tile, covering everything from affordable ceramic in neutral finishes to large-format porcelain slabs and honed natural slate. Visit our Addison, IL showroom to compare materials at scale — our specialists will guide your selection from first sample to final installation.

Which Tile Is Right for Your Kitchen Floor?
Every kitchen is different. CSI carries three primary tile categories for kitchen floors, each with its own strengths, price points, and ideal applications.
Ceramic Tile
Fired clay with a glaze coating, ceramic tile is the most cost-accessible option for kitchen floors. Available in a vast range of colors, textures, and formats — from classic 12x12 to subway-style planks — ceramic delivers reliable performance in low-to-moderate traffic kitchens. It's easy to clean, naturally cool underfoot, and pairs well with radiant heat systems.
- PEI rating 3–4 (suitable for residential kitchens)
- Glazed surface resists stains and moisture
- Wide range of sizes: 12x12 to 24x24
- Lower cost per sq ft vs. porcelain
- Pairs with radiant in-floor heating
Porcelain Tile
Fired at higher temperatures from a denser clay body, porcelain is the preferred choice for busy family kitchens and commercial food-service floors. Its water absorption rate of less than 0.5% makes it virtually impervious to moisture, and PEI ratings of 4–5 qualify it for the heaviest residential and commercial foot traffic. Available in large-format planks and slabs that mimic marble and wood.
- Water absorption under 0.5% — nearly waterproof
- PEI 4–5 for heavy residential & commercial use
- Available up to 48x48-inch large format
- Through-body color (chips show same color)
- Scratch and stain resistant without sealing
Natural Stone Tile
Slate, travertine, limestone, and marble deliver one-of-a-kind character that no manufactured tile can replicate. Each piece is unique, bringing natural variation in color, veining, and texture. Stone tile adds significant resale appeal and a sense of permanence to any kitchen. It requires periodic sealing and a higher installation skill level — exactly the expertise CSI's crews bring to every job.
- Unique natural variation in every tile
- Slate and travertine ideal for kitchen use
- Requires sealing every 1–2 years
- Adds premium resale and design value
- Professional installation required for correct results

Kitchen Tile Layouts That Make an Impact
The tile you choose is only half the equation — how it's laid changes the entire visual character of your kitchen. A simple grid layout reads clean and classic. A diagonal offset makes a small kitchen feel larger. Herringbone adds texture and movement. Plank-format porcelain laid in a brick-bond pattern passes for hardwood from across the room.
Our showroom team at CSI will help you visualize layout options using full-size boards and digital mockups before your installation date, so you can commit to your design with confidence — not guesswork.
Grid / Stack
Clean, timeless, and easy to install. Works in any kitchen size. Best for square or rectangular tiles.
Diagonal / Diamond
A 45-degree rotation visually expands narrow kitchens. Adds elegance without changing the tile itself.
Brick Bond / Offset
Classic stagger familiar from hardwood. Ideal for plank-shaped tiles creating a wood-look kitchen floor.
Herringbone
V-pattern installation adds visual dynamism. Popular for entryways, galley kitchens, and feature zones.

Chicagoland's Tile Flooring Specialist Since 1979
Tile installation is only as good as the crew setting it. A precise grid requires meticulous layout planning, a flat substrate, consistent mortar bed depth, and tight grout line control. CSI's installation crews are trained and experienced specifically in these demands — not generalist contractors rotating through different trades.
Founded by Carmine and Victor Molfese in 1979, Carpet Services Incorporated has built its reputation by employing in-house certified crews rather than subcontracting to unknown third parties. When you hire CSI for your kitchen tile floor, you get the same team from measurement through final walkthrough.
We carry commercial-grade material lines alongside residential options, so whether you're renovating a single residential kitchen or outfitting a restaurant dining room, we have the product and the proven installation standard to match.

Kitchen Tile Flooring — Your Questions Answered
Porcelain tile is widely regarded as the top choice for kitchen floors due to its near-zero water absorption, stain resistance, and hardness rating (PEI 4–5). Ceramic tile is a cost-effective alternative for lower-traffic kitchens. Natural stone like slate or travertine adds luxury but requires sealing. Your best option depends on traffic level, moisture exposure, and budget.
A standard kitchen tile installation — including subfloor prep, tile setting, grouting, and cure time — typically takes 2 to 4 days for an average-sized kitchen. Larger kitchens, intricate patterns, or significant subfloor repairs can add time. Plan to stay off the floor for at least 24–48 hours after grouting.
Tile requires a rigid, flat subfloor to prevent cracking. If your existing subfloor is bouncy, warped, or has high-moisture areas, it will need to be addressed before installation. CSI assesses the subfloor during the free measurement visit and includes any required leveling or prep work in your written estimate.
12x24-inch and 24x24-inch tiles are the most popular for modern kitchens — larger formats create fewer grout lines, making floors easier to clean and visually spacious. Smaller mosaic and hex tiles work well in compact kitchens or as accent zones. Our showroom has full-size displays so you can see how tile sizes look at scale before deciding.
Sweep or vacuum regularly to remove grit that can scratch glazed surfaces. Mop with a pH-neutral cleaner — avoid vinegar or acidic products on natural stone. Seal grout lines every 1–2 years to prevent staining. Porcelain tile generally requires minimal maintenance; natural stone may need periodic professional sealing.
In some cases, yes — tile can be installed over existing tile if the current surface is firmly bonded, flat, and in good condition. However, this raises the floor height and can create transition issues at doorways. Installation over vinyl is generally not recommended without removal. CSI evaluates the existing surface during your free estimate and recommends the best approach.
