Flooring Maintenance Tips That Actually Work

The biggest factor in how long your floors look great isn't the price — it's how they're maintained. Here are the most impactful habits our team shares with every CSI customer after installation:

  • Use the right cleaner for your floor type. Hardwood needs a pH-neutral solution; tile can handle mild acidic cleaners for grout; LVP should never be steam-cleaned. Using the wrong product voids most warranties.
  • Protect entry points. Up to 80% of dirt and grit enters from doorways. Quality entrance mats — both outside and inside — dramatically reduce the abrasive wear on all floor types.
  • Felt pads under every leg. Hardwood and luxury vinyl are vulnerable to scratches from furniture. Replace felt pads twice a year; they compress and lose effectiveness over time.
  • Control humidity year-round. Wood and engineered products are sensitive to seasonal humidity swings. Keep interior relative humidity between 35–55% to prevent cupping, gapping, and cracking.
  • Address spills within minutes. Most floor finishes are water-resistant, not waterproof. Standing liquid — especially on hardwood seams — can cause permanent damage if left more than 15–20 minutes.

Common Questions

Flooring Resources FAQ

Porcelain tile and luxury vinyl plank (LVP) are the top choices for high-traffic areas. Porcelain is nearly impervious to scratches and moisture, while LVP offers a softer underfoot feel with similar resilience. For commercial settings, our team at Carpet Services Incorporated typically recommends commercial-grade LVP or polished porcelain — both stand up to rolling carts, heavy foot traffic, and daily cleaning chemicals.
Solid hardwood is ideal for main living areas and bedrooms where moisture isn't a concern. Engineered wood works in basements, kitchens, and over radiant heat because its cross-ply core resists expansion and contraction. Both offer the warmth and character of real wood; the right choice comes down to your subfloor type, the room's moisture levels, and your long-term refinishing plans.
Measure length × width in feet to get square footage, then add 10% for straightforward rectangular rooms, or 15% for rooms with angles, diagonal patterns, or complex cuts. Always order extra to have matching material available for future repairs. Our showroom team will walk through the calculation with you during a free consultation — no guesswork involved.
Most single rooms are completed in one to two days, including subfloor prep and transitions. A whole-home installation typically spans two to five days, depending on square footage, floor type selected, and the extent of subfloor work needed. CSI's project coordinator provides a firm timeline at your free estimate appointment so you can plan accordingly.
Sweep or vacuum with a soft-bristle attachment daily to remove abrasive grit. Damp-mop weekly using a pH-neutral hardwood cleaner — never saturate the wood. Wipe up spills immediately, use felt pads under all furniture legs, and avoid walking on hardwood in spiked shoes. Professional refinishing every 7–10 years restores the original finish and significantly extends the floor's lifespan.
