Your Timeline, Explained

What Determines How Long Flooring Installation Takes?

One of the first questions homeowners ask us is: how long does flooring installation take? The honest answer depends on the flooring type, room size, subfloor condition, and how much prep work is involved. At Carpet Services Incorporated (CSI), we've been answering that question for Chicagoland customers since 1979, and we know that a clear timeline means fewer surprises and less disruption to your home or business.

Generally speaking, carpet is the fastest option — a full home can often be done in a single day. Luxury vinyl plank (LVP) is nearly as quick, with no acclimation period required. Solid hardwood takes the most time because the planks need to acclimate to your home's humidity before installation begins. Tile falls in the middle, with curing time adding a day or two to the schedule.

Below, we break down the typical timeline for each major flooring type, explain what can speed things up or slow them down, and walk you through CSI's step-by-step installation process so you know exactly what to expect on job day.

Flooring Installation Timelines at a Glance

These are typical ranges for professional installation. Actual times vary by square footage, subfloor condition, and layout complexity.

Carpet

2–8 Hours · 1 Day

A single bedroom (150–200 sq ft) takes 2–4 hours. A full home up to 2,000 sq ft is typically complete in one day. Furniture moving and tack-strip replacement can add time.

Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP)

1–2 Days

No acclimation required. A 1,500 sq ft area installs in one to two days. LVP's click-lock system speeds things up significantly compared to glue-down products.

Engineered Wood

2–4 Days

Requires 24–48 hours of acclimation before installation. The install itself takes 1–2 days for an average home. More stable than solid hardwood — less movement with humidity changes.

Solid Hardwood

3–7 Days

Allow 3–5 days of acclimation. Installation takes 2–4 days for 1,000–2,000 sq ft. If site-finishing is included, add another 1–2 days for sanding, staining, and sealing.

Ceramic & Porcelain Tile

2–4 Days

Tile sets in 1–2 days, but mortar and grout need 24–48 hours to cure before foot traffic is safe. Large-format tiles and intricate patterns take longer to set precisely.

Custom Area Rugs

Half Day – 1 Day

Measuring, padding placement, and binding take a few hours. Rugs with custom binding may require lead time, but the on-site installation is quick compared to full-floor projects.

What Affects Your Timeline

Factors That Can Speed Up or Slow Down Your Project

Knowing the variables that affect your flooring installation timeline helps you plan ahead — whether you're coordinating around a home renovation, a commercial opening date, or a family move-in deadline.

Factors that typically extend a project:

  • Subfloor damage, moisture issues, or leveling needed before installation
  • Removal and disposal of old flooring — especially glued-down materials
  • Material acclimation (required for all solid and engineered hardwood)
  • Complex room shapes, diagonal layouts, or custom tile patterns
  • Furniture removal and reinstallation across multiple rooms
  • Large square footage with multiple material transitions

Factors that speed things up:

  • Flooring already ordered and on-site before installation day
  • Subfloor confirmed clean, level, and dry at pre-install inspection
  • Rooms cleared of furniture before the crew arrives
  • Straightforward rectangular room layouts with minimal transitions
  • Experienced installation crew — CSI's team has 45+ years of combined expertise

Common Questions

Flooring Installation Timeline FAQ

Carpet installation for a standard bedroom (150–200 sq ft) typically takes 2–4 hours. A full home of 1,500–2,000 sq ft is usually complete in a single day — sometimes two if substantial furniture moving and subfloor prep are needed.
Solid hardwood installation for an average room takes 1–3 days. A full-home installation of 1,000–2,000 sq ft usually requires 3–5 days. Add 1–3 days for acclimation before work begins, and additional time if sanding and finishing are needed on-site.
LVP is one of the fastest flooring options. A single room installs in 3–6 hours; a 1,500 sq ft area typically takes 1–2 days. There is no acclimation period required, which speeds up the overall project.
Ceramic or porcelain tile installation typically takes 1–2 days to set, followed by 24–48 hours of curing before grouting. Total project time for an average bathroom (50–80 sq ft) runs 2–3 days; larger areas add more time accordingly.
Common delays include subfloor repairs or leveling, furniture removal logistics, moisture testing, material acclimation (required for hardwood), large or complex room layouts, custom patterns, and old adhesive or glue-down removal.
For LVP and carpet, you can walk on the floor immediately after installation. Engineered and solid hardwood should be walked on lightly within hours but avoid heavy furniture for 24 hours. Tile requires 24–48 hours before foot traffic after grouting is complete.
